Proposed Sumburgh Lighthouse Exterior enlarge Proposed Sumburgh Lighthouse Exterior The Sumburgh Head area at the southernmost tip of Shetland is set to be redeveloped in a £5.4 million project due to begin later in 2010. Shetland Islands Council has approved planning permission for the project which will see the area transformed into a top class visitor attraction.

Plans for the area include the creation of a two storey visitor centre, a shop and an educational facility. The lighthouse keeper’s cottage, owned by Shetland Amenity Trust, will also be remodelled and available as self catering accommodation when work is completed.

Shetland Amenity Trust is working closely with the RSPB and other partners to ensure the works are carried out sensitively, and with minimal disruption to the significant seabird colonies and visitors to the site.

Further information will be available on the progress of the project once work begins.
