Shetland Mapmaker discussed at National Library of Scotland

James Robertson enlarge James Robertson Joanne Wishart, Assistant Archivist at Shetland Museum and Archives, will travel to Edinburgh on Thursday 4th July to give a talk at the National Library of Scotland on Yell mapmaker James Robertson.

Little known surveyor and mapmaker Robertson (1753-1829) went to the Caribbean to seek his fortune. He produced an incredibly detailed and impressive map of Jamaica during the sugar boom which is among the National Library of Scotland's collections.

Joanne will explore all aspects of egomaniac Robertson's life and career in the Caribbean , and will consider why he could not replicate that success in the UK.
