Introduction

Mending a Kishie by the fireside

This website has been developed, in conjunction with pupils of the Scalloway Junior High School, as part of a project to help young people in Shetland have a taste of what life was like in the 19th Century for ordinary Shetland people.

You will find information here outlining some of the history of Shetland, and how the economy depended on crofting and fishing as a form of survival subsistence.

Men gathered on board during the fishing season

Crofting still takes place in Shetland, although it is no longer part of the desperate struggle to survive that it used to be. Fishing too has survived but in a totally different form.  The tragedy of the Gloup Disaster of 1881 showed up the shortcomings of the 'sixareen' for deep water fishing, and marked a change in fishing practices.

The project has been initiated and co-ordinated by Colin Nicol, of Scalloway Junior High School (Contact details are HERE)

Extensive use was made of the excellent resources provided by Shetland Museum (almost all of the old photographs on this website are courtesy of them), and other bodies and individuals. Please see our Links & Credits page for more information

Special mention must go to the pupils of Scalloway Junior High School, as much of the content is their work, based on the project notes created by Colin Nicol. These notes, as a teacher's resource, are available by clicking on the 'Teacher Info.' button on the left.
