CYCLING BY THE SEA
In summer, Shetland is good cycling country. Though the islands are far from
flat, most road ascents are long and gentle. Main roads are wide and many
sections have a hard shoulder providing a reassuring refuge if you need to
pull over. In most situations you can see and be seen
a long way ahead. The surfaces are good and, for most of the day, traffic is
very light. Minor roads may be narrow, but on most of them visibility is
excellent and traffic levels are even lower. The size of the islands is such that a cycle touring holiday, with daily
legs of between 30 and 50km is a realistic option. Touring cyclists can book
over-night accommodation at hotels, guest houses or bed and breakfast
locations.
Alternatively they may choose to stay in camping
böds (low cost
camping barn accommodation) located in historical dwellings throughout the
islands. Sensible all weather equipment is a must, of course, and when the
sun shines, don't underestimate its strength.
It's possible to link up with local cycling enthusiasts during your stay.
The Shetland Wheelers hold road events and time trials. The North Sea Cycle
Route, a developing series of international links encircling the North Sea,
passes through Shetland. When operational, the routes will be signposted and
a map will be available. |
